How To Use an O2 Sim Card in a GPS Tracker

This is a step by step guide to setting up and using an O2 pay as you go sim card in a GPS tracker.

Before you begin, if you don’t already have a suitable O2 sim card we recommend the O2 Classic PAYG as the best option, you can order one for free HERE.

This guide requires you to have access to an unlocked or O2 locked mobile phone.
A lot of people have these lying around in a drawer somewhere. It can be a very basic model as it only needs to dial numbers and receive text messages.

If you don’t have a suitable mobile it is not a major problem but you will not have the ability to check the sim balance online or turn off the voice mail. In this case start at stage 6.
O2 sim cards have the phone number on the packaging so its not a problem finding this before it is installed.

  1. Install the sim in a unlocked or O2 mobile phone preferably one that uses a full size sim or if not one that uses the same size as the device you are going to be using it in. This is to save having to use an adapter afterwards.
  2. Top up the sim, you can do this either online at O2.co.uk by calling 4444 from the mobile or using a to up voucher.
  3. Turn off the voicemail by calling 1760 – This is useful if you are going to be calling your device to obtain its location as it saves you being put through to the voicemail service when the device cuts the call.
  4. Setup the number on myO2 – Visit myo2 and add the number to a new or existing myO2  account. You will need to use a authorisation code text sent to the sim in the phone to complete this. This allows you to view the balance and top up the sim card easily online. You can also set an automatic top up if you prefer.
  5. Install the sim into your tracking device.
  6. Begin configuring your tracking device referring to the user guide for the correct procedure and commands.
  7. Set the APN (if required) – Depending on your device and how you are going to use it you may need to set the APN (Access Point Name)
Devices require the APN when using data services, these include obtaining location address information and sending data to a tracking platform.
You will need to refer to your devices user guide for the correct procedure but the settings for O2 are below.
